  • THAAD - Raytheon's Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) System is the upper tier of the Army's two-tier Theater Missile Defense Concept. The sophisticated electronics used in the THAAD System require a high performance and lightweight cooling solution capable of transferring a high heat load with only a small change in temperature. Thermacore's cold plate design uses heat pipes embedded in an aluminum plate to provide the necessary high-efficiency heat transfer in this space and weight constrained application. Heat pipe technology is the key component that efficiently removes the heat from the critical electronics. Using heat pipes, this cold plate has the weight of aluminum with an effective thermal conductivity more that four times that of copper. The cold plate is capable of operating in harsh environments, including high altitude, shock, vibration, and extreme temperatures and humidity.

Thermacore has a reputation of developing high tech and innovative solutions and this is no better demonstrated in the Military arena. All areas of technology are pushed to their limits when used by armed forces and this is no different for cooling solutions. From Airborne radar systems to ruggedised laptops, Thermacore has successfully deployed cooling solutions to the armed forces and continues to have close working relations with many top tier military providers.   Thermacore Europe Military Application

Thermacore can not only provide the cooling system, but also machined chassis into which the two phase heat pipe cooling solutions and electronics are installed. A very high spec and technically difficult area to work within, ESCAN Radar cooling and manufacturing solutions are a good example of what can be achieved with Thermacore as a Thermal solution provider and, more importantly, partner.

Heat pipes successfully spread the heat along the heat sink surface allowing all fins to work as effectively as possible. A lightweight heat sink using two phase heat pipe technology to significantly reduce the weight of standard heat sink previously adopted was therefore possible. Seven plating processes are adopted to maintain strict environmental protection and, where necessary, electrical isolation.
